One of my brothers sent me this link.
Isn’t it nice to read about a fellow obsessive admitting it?
My brother’s artwork is beautiful; he’s been teaching himself over the last couple of years. proving once again that we don’t need a degree or masses of money to be an artist. We just need obsession, hard work, and love.
The people who will be hiring us usually understand this, at least better than other industries. So, while Americans are unwilling to pay for art in school – because they think it’s a sacred talent given by their god, and why fund the special? – those of us who get into art know that nobody can build a gateway to stop us from making art. We can all do it, we just have to give it the hard work and love it demands.
If your kid wants to be an artist, and you can’t get the money for an art college, don’t crush their dreams. Send them to Deviantart. There are enough tutorials and professionals on that site to get them going. There are also lots of bad fans and stupid politics, but as in any forum, nobody has to be part of that.
Remind them that all styles – including the one they are developing on their own – are valid. Deviantart has a Sketch division, so everybody can share and get feedback with less pressure.
