No, the man isn’t naive; he’s has a pure mind. He wouldn’t seduce anyone else who he knew wouldn’t want it, so it’s hard for him to see it coming. His brother couldn’t tell a lie — probably didn’t see the need for them — and so fell for whatever Hitler and his administration got up to.
It’s a weakness in the noble; they can’t see the bad stuff because, like most of us, they think everybody’s like themselves.
And he’s basically drunk. One of my readers complained that my characters did all this stupid stuff while they were drunk or on something.
Well — yeah. Isn’t that when we usually do it? Why do you think the military allows the under-aged to drink like fish — and hands out smokes like bundles of straw? For all there have been philosopher soldiers, we’re not really smart if we think the way to solve any problem is by killing or dying to get where we want. It’s the last, worst, final option.
